38 U.S. Senators Demand Freedom For Pakistani Advocate Aitzaz Ahsan
By SYED ADEEB
(InformPress.com) – Thirty-eight [38] U.S. Senators have strongly urged Pakistani military dictator General Pervez Musharraf, in their recent official letter, to release Advocate Aitzaz Ahsan, the Pakistan Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) President, from prison immediately.
Barrister-At-Law Aitzaz Ahsan – an eminent Advocate of the Supreme Court of Pakistan (SCP); former federal Minister for Law, Justice, Interior, Narcotics Control and Education; ex-MNA; former Senator; ex-MPA; former Punjab Minister for Information, Planning, Development, Culture and Tourism; and human rights activist – was illegally kidnapped, unlawfully arrested, illegally tortured and unlawfully detained in a dungeon jail of Pakistan in November 2007 by the tyrannical and mercenary Army-Police of General Musharraf, a corrupt, terrorist, tyrant of the Pakistani Army.
Read this letter of 38 U.S. Senators about Pakistani Attorney Aitzaz Ahsan to General Musharraf:
UNITED STATES SENATE
Washington, DC 20510
November 6, 2007
Pervez Musharraf
[Ruler] of Pakistan
Via Facsimile
Dear [General] Musharraf:
We write to you on behalf of Mr. Aitzaz Ahsan who was recently arrested pursuant to your declaration of emergency law.
The United States has enjoyed a close relationship with your country and your administration in recent years. We recognize Pakistan’s important role in the region and assistance in the effort to bring Osama bin Laden and “al-Qaeda” to justice.
However, we are very concerned about the detention of Mr. Ahsan. As you are no doubt aware, Mr. Ahsan is a highly distinguished attorney and political leader. He is a former government minister and former opposition leader in the Senate of Pakistan. A senior advocate in the Supreme Court of Pakistan, he consistently earns the highest rating in rankings of legal professionals in Pakistan. He has represented a variety of high profile political figures in Pakistan, including former Prime Minister [Benazir] Bhutto, former Prime Minister [Muhammad] Nawaz Sharif and Chief Justice [Iftikhar Muhammad] Chaudhry of the Pakistani Supreme Court.
Mr. Ahsan was arrested by the army last Saturday, November 3 [2007], during a press conference he was holding in Islamabad. He is reportedly being jailed in Rawalpindi. It is simply not right that Mr. Ahsan is being jailed for doing his job as an attorney by defending the rights of his client.
We ask that you immediately look into this matter and urge you to release Mr. [Aitzaz] Ahsan from prison immediately.
Sincerely,
1. U.S. Senator KENT CONRAD (D-ND)
